Greg Shapiro on EenVandaag “Trump’s 250th”

I’m working on a new theater show called KING ME: 250 Years of Donald Trump. Dutch news show EenVandaag interviewed me about the differences between USA’s 1976 Independence Day – and #usa250.
Here’s a transcript of the interview with journalist Bart Hettema:
Greg: “This is the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. And I was 8 years old here.”
Bart Hettema: “Comedian Greg Shapiro has lived in the Netherlands for 30 years. He understands why Trump appeals to many Americans. And yet, the way the president is using the USA’s 250th birthday to promote his own political agenda is quite un-American.”
Greg: “He behaves more and more like a king. So how is it possible that – you know, after 250 years – we’re celebrating independence from the King. And now we basically have a King again -?”
Bart: “In September, Shapiro is presenting his new theater show. Appropriately enough, the title is KING ME: 250 Years of Donald Trump.”
Greg: “That’s maybe why we have so many protests all across America right now. They’re called the NO KINGS protests. And that’s the theme: We Don’t Do Kings in This Country. That’s unique to this country. And we don’t want someone who acts more and more like a king. And treats his family like the royal family. You know, (as Trump) “All the money has to come through me. All the donations have to come through my sons and their companies.”
It’s so monumentally corrupt that… something’s got to give. Because we don’t do kings in this country. We just don’t.”

Greg: “Trump is acting like the country is a subsidiary of his own company. ‘L’état, c’est moi’. According to him, you cannot spell America without ‘ME’. I think it’s only a matter of time before we change the Declaration of Independence to the Declaration of Obedience to the Great Leader.”
