Greg Shapiro Voices Trump for Season Finale ZDF ‘Heute Show’ for USA 250.

In 2017 – the first weekend Trump became president – I voiced the video known as the “Netherlands Second” video, for Dutch comedian Arjen Lubach’s tv show. The video went viral and had copycat versions around the world. Since then, I’ve made a few more Trump videos for Arjen Lubach’s Dutch TV shows. But I’ve made many more for German TV.
Germany’s version of ‘The Daily Show’ is called ‘Heute Show’ on ZDF with host Oliver Welke. Starting in 2017, I would voice the recurring segment called “Trump’s Tagebuch,” or “Trump’s Diary.” I did the occasional voice over for German TV during Biden’s term. But with Trump back in the White House, I’ve been getting more requests.
This season, the writers had Trump commenting on the royal visit from King Charles.

And for the season-ender, the writers wanted me to voice Trump being frustrated about the many artists who have refused to play for his USA 250 concert. And then they wanted me to have Trump singing Elvis songs instead. I did my best to find the right karaoke versions online, but my singing was not a perfect match with the backing tracks. In other words, it was accurate to how Trump would probably sound.

(My Jewish grandfather – who fled Belarus for the USA in the early 1900s – said he always found it comforting that I had brought the Shapiro family name back to Europe. I can only imagine him smiling if he knew the family name would be credited on German television.)
