Growing up in the United States, we were taught that the Declaration of Independence was not just the start of a revolution, but a revolutionary concept the world had never seen. Not so! Among the many similarities between the Dutch revolution (the Eighty Years War) and the American Revolution, there’s Het Plakkaat van Verlatinghe from 1581. Granted, it’s written in kooky Dutch funny-talk. But even the Dutch language is responsible for many American words (for example, the word koekje)(which is why we Yanks don’t say biscuit)
