3 NEW ENGLISH COMEDY INITIATIVES IN THE HAGUE
7 February, 2016
In the heady days before 2008, Diligentia Theater would bring international comedians to play for the huge numbers of English speakers in The Hague. Dylan Moran, Steve Hughes, and sometimes Boom Chicago. Then OOPS. It all stopped. Why? There was certainly no decline in English speakers, but there was no one bringing international comedians to the Hague. Frustrating! And the slap in the face was the international comediansstill coming to Amsterdam. But never The Hague. Why?
Back to Square One. In 2011, I personally started organizing international comedians to tour the Netherlands and – as I promised Billy from The Hague Online – we would always play Den Haag. Not 500-seat Diligentia, but at least 100-seat Pepijn. At the same time, the Hague got its own English-language improv group The Cyclepaths, whose home base is also Theater Pepijn.
3X / SEASON PEPIJN – CYCLEPATHS
And now the Cyclepaths and I have teamed up for a regular double bill, 3 times throughout the season. First half standup comedy on the US elections. Second half improv. The next date is 21 April. Cyclepaths + Shapiro
3X / SEASON PEPIJN – PEPIJN COMEDY CLUB (English Edition)
Also in Pepijn, there’s a recurring English comedy night from an impresario named Willem. It’s Willem’s English Comedy Club, and I’ll be hosting the next one on 2 June.

MONTHLY IN BRANOUL – THE HAGUE ENGLISH COMEDY NIGHTS
But not just Pepijn! Just around the corner from Pepijn is a little theater called BRANOUL. That’s where there’s now monthly English comedy from InternationalComedians.com. Yes, I said monthly. Each show features international comedians like Canadian Glenn Wool, American Stephanie Tucci, and Irishman John Colleary. Colleary is the headliner 20 Feb., and I’ll be hosting. Branoul is a newly remodeled 75-seater, and I love to play there. They’re now partnered with Speaker’s Corner Restaurant, where we can meet up afterwards.
More monthly dates are:
March 19 – 9:00 pm
April 16 – 9:00 pm
May 21 – 9:00 pm
Den Haag, they said it couldn’t be done. They said Den Haag doesn’t need English comedy. They said ‘let them go to Amsterdam.’ Prove them wrong! Support English comedy in The Hague.
