Greg Shapiro Hosts Amsterdam Debate

Greg Shapiro Hosts Amsterdam Debate for City Council Elections

13 March

As I’m fond of saying, “If you’ve been living in the Netherlands long enough you can pronounce the term ‘gemeenteraadsverkiezingen,’ then maybe you can VOTE in the Dutch nation-wide city council elections.” Yes, you must be a Dutch citizen to vote in all the other elections – but this one is for anyone who has been living in the Netherlands for 3-5 years.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2026/03/local-elections-march-18-who-can-vote-and-what-are-the-issues/

Amsterdam political parties have definitely realized it: “Wow, there are a LOT of voters from the International / Expat community. And wow, do they NOT speak Dutch very well…” Hence, the “Internationals Debate,” featuring 5 different Amsterdam parties, who were willing to debate in English.

And – just like 4 years ago – they got me to be the debate moderator.

Now these Dutch politicians would get a chance to answer questions like “Why do you politicians keep blaming the expats for ruining the city?” The 5 politicians answered by saying versions of: “you’re most welcome in Amsterdam, and it’s not fair to scapegoat people.”
Me: “Next question: how many of you would change your answer for a Dutch-only audience?”

For the most part, I played it straight.

But I did make a couple more jokes. For example, there were politicians from both Labor (PvdA) & the GreenLeft (GroenLinks) – even though they are planning a fusion after the election 18 March. For now, they were both free to express their own positions – or not? They were unclear. SO when I was introducing the 2nd debate topic, I said “let’s start on the other side, to give you two a chance to get your stories straight.”

And there was a moment when the politician from Amsterdam VVD said something nice about Amsterdam Labor (PvdA). I said “So why was it so hard for you to form a national coalition?”

In any case, please go vote on 18 March!

Greg Shapiro New Show ‘KING ME’

GREG SHAPIRO NEW SHOW and Tour
Coming to Dutch theaters this fall ‘KING ME: 250 Years of Donald Trump’

19 February, 2026

Poster design: Jan Martin Wilschut Photo: Nathalie Hennis

In 2026, on the 4th of July, the USA celebrates 250 years of independence – by bringing back the King. With Donald Trump in power, it feels like it’s been 250 years. ‘What a perfect time for another American Revolution,’ says Dutch-American comedian Greg Shapiro.

Shapiro dares to share a positive take on the USA. Perhaps Trump’s tyrant act won’t last long, especially if Europe is strong. Mark Rutte refers to Trump as ‘Daddy.’ But Ursula says, ‘Mama is boos.’ If the Epstein files prove anything, it’s that certain world leaders are attracted to anything but strong adult women.

The American Netherlander Greg Shapiro will also help you prepare for the US Midterm elections in November 2026 – if they are even allowed to happen this time. And since Shapiro is known for his Trump impression, will he be allowed back into his country of birth? Or will he be disappeared by ICE?

Shapiro presents a mix of standup and storytelling, with a bit of Trump-inspired improvisation. KING ME is Shapiro’s 9th solo show.

Greg’s Dutch Climate Startups

Greg’s Dutch Climate Startups: Lab-Grown Beef & Lab-Grown Leather

18 February, 2026

In January I spoke at the HollandBio event, and I was inspired by this new Dutch startup called Qorium that makes lab-grown leather. Why is this such a potential game changer? Fighting Deforestation.

The CEO Michael Newton explained how leather is a multi-billion dollar industry, but the process of separating the cow hide from the cow is one of the grossest things on earth. “Making leather is polluting, wasteful and controversial.” And you can try fake leather, but it’s mostly plastic-based.
The audio technician backstage turned to me and said “It’s true! I work with leather in my other job, and pleather sucks.”
The CEO: “as wasteful as the process is, leather is – by volume – a very valuable part of a cow.” And the audio guy said, “THAT’s why – even though people eat less red meat – the price of leather drives up the demand.”

So I looked it up: A cow’s hide is only worth 5% of a slaughtered steer’s value. Although – profit margins in the beef cattle industry hover around 5%. Sounds to me like potential for DISRUPTION!
Less leather, less cattle expansion, less deforestation.

MAKING REAL LEATHER WITHOUT THE COW?

Yes. Step 1 does involve biopsy cells from a donor cow. Then Step 2 is when they replicate the cells in the lab – to do what they do best – make collagen. And in Step 3 they stimulate the collagen cells to grow as they normally would inside the cow – because SCIENCE.
So if you really want to stop deforestation to grow cattle – try Lab-grown Leather. WATCH:

Next: Beef without the cow: MosaMeat.

A few years ago, I spoke for a Dutch startup making lab-grown beef. Or as they like to call it: “cultured” beef.
Because I guess “lab grown” makes you think of Frankenstein, but cultured makes you think of Young Frankenstein, in a tuxedo.

They biopsy “a sesame seed sized sample of cells,” and they let them grow in the lab just like they would grow in nature. Apparently, one sample from one cow can grow enough protein cells too make 80,000 burgers.

Stay tuned next time for Dutch startups in lab-grown fish, lab-grown pork, and lab-grown fruit.

…But I don’t know when the next time will be, because two of those companies went bankrupt, and the third one doesn’t exist just yet.

Shapiro New OpenMic Night

Greg Shapiro Launches New Monthly Open Mic Night on VU Amsterdam campus at Bar Boele

10 Jan, 2026

There’s something lovely happening in Amsterdam’s English-language comedy scene, and I want to contribute. There are so many new voices coming up, but they need more opportunities to develop. Already there are open mic nights connected to the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam University College, but why not the VU Vrije University?

Bar Boele is the campus hangout for the cultural center at Theater Griffioen / Rialto. So why not have a Monday Open Mic Night there? That’s what I pitched, and that’s what we’re doing, starting January, 2026.

As of now, I’m programming and hosting a mix of New Talent and New Material (from existing talent). And it’s free, so you can’t not like it.

Greg Shapiro Keynote Demo

GREG SHAPIRO Keynote Speaker DEMO (SEE ALSO: EVENT HOST DEMO)

10 January, 2026

In Corporate Speaking, there are two basic categories: Event Host and Keynote Speaker. Sometimes I’m hired to do both.

BUT for now I’ve now prepared two different video demo’s. Here is:

GREG SHAPIRO AS Keynote Speaker

Some case studies:

NL Foreign Ministry: “Summit for Democracy” Global Livestream

In 2023, the US State Department initiated a series of “Summit for Democracy” livestream events. The Netherlands was chosen to host the one about freedom of speech and journalism. I was hired by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to perform a short standup routine on the topic of the freedom of speech.

The Dutch Ministry encouraged me to say anything I wanted, as that was the point, But then we heard that US State Department would be using a slight delay, because they might want to edit some of the content. I teased the US that Americans still don’t understand the meaning of the word irony.

Expat Center Zeeland: “How to Be Dutch” Livestream.

Since I wrote my books How to Be Dutch: the Quiz and The American Netherlander: 25 Years of Expat Tales – I get requests to speak as an expert about cultural differences. I’ve spoken for Expat Centers in Amsterdam, The Hague, Leiden, Eindhoven, and Almere. This one for Zeeland was a livestream. Hence the video.

Google Netherlands: “Year in Search” Comedy Special.

Google Netherlands celebrates every year with an event to acknowledge their hottest search terms. Boom Chicago got the call to create a sort of Dutch oudejaarsconference, which I performed with Pep Rosenfeld. It became a standup special called The Year in Search. Included in the playlist is my take on the Netherlands in Eurovision.

Utrecht Int’l Comedy Festival: “Listpusher” Comedy Special.

In 2022 I was asked to be a “Lijstduwer” for a Dutch political party in the local elections. (but which one? You can watch the comedy special online.)

Radio 10 US Election Day: Trump Q&A with Gerard Ekdom

Since the ‘Netherlands Second’ video in 2017, I am regularly asked to perform my Trump imitation for live events, like this US Election Day special on Dutch Radio10.

TEDx Amsterdam VU: “An EU Late Night Comedy Show.”
I’ve hosted TEDx events, but this was a recording of my TED talk. I argue that the EU should have a continental version of an American style late night comedy show.

Book Launch “Total Action”: Tailored Standup.

25 years ago, I performed for a book launch for Dutch business guru and professor Peter Vervest. 25 years later, he released a follow-up book, and I was hired as a keynote speaker for the gala dinner. From the host Vincent Everts: “You didn’t just add humor to the evening – you elevated it. Your insight, your sharpness, your perfectly tailored jokes – and the way you connected it to the original Total Action book from 25 years ago – it was just masterful.”

From the review in ARTS TALK MAGAZINE

Trivia, Trump, and Tremendous Timing (excerpt by Jay Mansilla, 4th November 2025)

Political comedy is as hard as it can be good. …The premise of the show promised a mix of stand-up and a pub quiz, a sharp idea teetering on the edge of gimmickry.

The room buzzed with the familiar chaos of trivia night. Onto the stage strode Pep Rosenfeld and Greg Shapiro, stalwarts of Amsterdam’s comedy scene. …Together they created the volatile charm of two mischievous uncles, the kind who could start a dinner-table mutiny.

Their rhythm was elegantly elastic … the performance glowed.

…Greg’s Trump impression worked as collective release; the audience could finally laugh at the new president without bracing for the fallout of his next decree.
…Pep and Greg have the kind of chemistry and intellect that make risk feel right.

…Pep and Greg took the clamour of the present and, under the stage lights, they made an audience breathe again. The next day we’d return to the blizzard, but somehow steadier. Tremendous work. Really tremendous.

Greg Shapiro Meral Polat Top 2000 a-gogo

Shapiro Wins TV Quiz

Shapiro Wins TV Quiz

30 December, 2025

In which I compete in a Dutch music quiz vs. Dutch speakers – and win! (even though the referee kept trying to get me drunk)

WATCH the EPISODE: https://npo.nl/npo3/top-2000-a-gogo/29-12-2025/VPWON_1365167/video

It’s the week after Christmas – and all through the Netherlands – every Dutch person is watching the Top2000. The list is compiled by the listeners with care (hoping Bohemian Rhapsody will again win fair & square). Seriously, every year there’s a Top 2000 song countdown. Every year it’s the same Number 1 song. And every year, it gets the best ratings. On radio – AND ON TV!

The TV quiz show “Top 2000 a-gogo” airs for the last week of the year. Every episode features 2 contestants. And on 29 December, 2025 – I was contestant Nr. 2. (side note: there’s a separate TV quiz show simply called “The Top 2000.” I’m not on that one.)

The quiz featured me vs. Dutch actress & singer Meral Polat.

The good news: the host is a fellow comedian, Diederik Ebbinge. The bad news: he’s already friends with Meral Polat, because they both played on the Dutch sitcom De Luizemoeder. We are big fans of that series (anyone who has had kids in Dutch schools must agree). So I was geeking out. (I even told Diederik that I mostly know him for his role as a parody TV host in Promenade. So it was fairly disconcerting to see him taking his job seriously.)

Soon I was answering questions about Dutch music – in Dutch. But luckily, MOST songs in the Dutch Top2000 are from the US / UK. And so many are OLD… which is my speciality. James Brown, Michael Jackson, Nirvana. Into The White Stripes, Eminem, and I surprised myself by recognizing a Dua Lipa song.

The final round involved live music being played by Dutch artist Bonno Getz. He took modern lyrics and sang them in the style of old school singers. I was so blown away by his – literally “in your face” performance – it was hard to guess anything. But I managed to get enough correct. And in the end – by a score of 21-17 – I won the Top2000 A-gogo music quiz.

Thanks to Producer Arjan Vlakveld for picking me!

Greg Shapiro Event Host

Greg Shapiro EVENT HOST Demo (see also: Keynote Speaker Demo)

18 December, 2025

In Corporate Speaking, there are two basic categories: Event Host and Keynote Speaker. Sometimes I’m hired to do both.

BUT for now I’ve now prepared two different video demo’s. Here is:

Greg Shapiro as EVENT HOST

Some case studies:

CitizenM Hotels: Host ‘CitizenM TV’ Global Livestream

During Covid, companies had to cancel their traditional offsite annual general meeting. But Dutch CitizenM hotels decided to put theirs online. They wanted to make it like a late-night TV show. And they needed a host. That was me. It went so well, they asked me back for Season 2.

Agristo Potatoes: Host Promo Video

This Belgian agribusiness giant hired me to host their promo video, directed by Dutch legend Dennis Bots. The concept was inspired by the DollarShave and Old Spice ads. And it involved me “parachuting” into Belgium. My WW2 grandparents would be proud.

Amsterdam Zuidas ‘Inclusivity25’: Host & QuizMaster of Diversity Day

Hello Zuidas hired me to host a Diversity Day event, and the guest speaker was also a white male. My job was to make the event as interactive as possible and share the microphone with diverse guests. In the video, they show me giving the mic to… a white guy. But he was neurodivergent! Not that you could tell from the edit, but we learned about his perspective of being high-functioning on the Autistic spectrum.

The GREAT fatboy SHOW: Host of Global Livestream

Dutch design start up fat boy brand became famous for their stuffed outdoor furniture. They needed to introduce their new product line, also during Covid. And I hosted their annual meeting online.

MediaMarkt: Host ‘MediaMarkt Awards’

Hosting an award show is a special challenge. “Who is handing over the award? Do they know which way to face for the cameras? Can we schedule a walk-through?” I have hosted too many award shows where the photo captures a totally confused winner whose face is in the shadow of awards / flowers. Luckily, this event was done properly.

AD.nl ‘The Butler’: Host of Online TV Series

Back in 2019, Amsterdam already had a problem with over-tourism. The Algemeen Dagblad news platform hired me for an online series to convince tourists to venture off the beaten path. In this episode, we convince a German couple to skip the Alkmaar cheese auction and go straight to the farm where they make the cheese.

Shapiro Voices Dutch AFV

Greg Shapiro Voices Dutch AFV as “LOHV” on SBS6

24 November, 2025
It started in 1990 as AFV: “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” In the Netherlands, it’s called LOHV “Lachen Om Home Video’s” – now with voiceovers by me, Greg Shapiro.

In the US, there’s a presenter – originally Bob Saget – who also narrates the video clips. In the Dutch version, there’s a Dutch presenter – who does NOT narrate the video clips. Apparently they tried that, but it ruined the humor. The only way the American videos get laughs is if the narrator is American as well.

Over the years, Disney has sent their clips to the Dutch broadcasters at Talpa with US presenters like Saget (RIP), Richard Kind, Steve Carell, Tom Bergeron, and currently Alfonso Ribeiro. But then came the licensing trouble with using the voice internationally. And that is what I got the call!

Shapiro Voices BeachBoys Documentary

During the audition, I tried a couple options: very American, but also very dry – a bit more British. In the end, they chose for the dry, sardonic voice – with the occasional over-the-top American announcer thrown in. We call it “Couch Commentary.” Somewhere between David Spade and John Cleese.

Writing on the fly

In the studio, we sometimes have to change the jokes. Like when they refer to the presenter, personally. But also the text sometimes gives away the joke. These days, when everyone is watching Instagram reels and TikTok videos of stupid people doing stupid things, the set up can be very minimal.

It reminds me of the time I did a column for BNR Nieuwsradio. The presenters are Dutch and the whole show is in Dutch. But they wanted me to speak in English. We tried it with both of us in Dutch, but it didn’t really work. Both of us in English? Also no. Just for fun, see tried it with questions in Dutch and answers in English. That is what worked. That’s the only version that worked.

In 2025, America’s Funniest Videos celebrates its 35th anniversary. In the Netherlands, you’ll be hearing my voice doing the narrating. Thanks to INC International Native Casting for getting me the gig!

Shapiro’s Dutch Climate GoodNews

Shapiro’s Dutch Climate GoodNews

13 November, 2025

Every year the Netherlands – the tiny NL! – puts 300 million kg textiles into the recycling bins. Only 15% is actually recycled… Not for long? Here are 3 Dutch startups changing the game.

Saxcell

Saxcell in the Dutch town of Enschede focuses on cotton. They take cotton clothing, dissolve it into a pulp, and then they create a replica of virgin cotton to make industrial scale fabrics. For virgin cotton, every kilogram requires an average of 6000 liters of water to become fabric. Saxcell’s cotton recycling process takes only 10 liters.

[So far so good, BUT what about synthetic fibers?]

BrightFiber

Amsterdam’s BrightFiber Textiles focuses on blends, such as cotton / polyester or acrylic.

In April 2025, BrightFiber brought a new facility online in the Amsterdam harbor – with 3 machines.
1 – a cleaner that removes zippers, buttons, labels.

2 – their smart sorter machine that separates materials.

3 – is the key: the fiberizing machine. The process produces high-quality fibers ready for the spinning mill. Currently, the machines can process 2.5 millon kg of textiles per year. Long way to get to 300million.

But they may have help soon, from:

BioFashionTech

This Rotterdam startup enables bacteria to do what humans and machines can’t. First, the textiles are ground into granules. Then, they use a patented fermentation technology, in where bacteria separate the plastic fibers from the natural ones. The separated plastic can be reused as new plastic or polyester yarn. And the organic material then becomes bioplastic or biofuel.

CEO and founder Fabiola Polli imagines a future where major fashion brands and retailers have their own in-house recycling plant.
The future could also hold her biotech solution being used for waste streams of plastic and paper food packaging.

(Tune in for tomorrow’s episode where fossil fuel companies buy up all 3 startups and shut them down.)

😉

This episode is largely based on reporting from Change.inc. Video includes images from Saxcell, BrightFiberTextiles and BioFashionTech.
